Cannabis Cultivation FAQ — Weed Gazette

Question 1

What do I actually need to start growing cannabis at home?

Accepted Answer

At minimum you need a grow space (tent, closet, or spare room), a light, a growing medium (soil is easiest for beginners), containers, nutrients, a pH meter, and seeds or clones. A small 2×2 or 2×4 tent with a quality LED is a great starting point. Don't over-invest in gear before your first grow — start simple, learn the basics, then upgrade.

Question 2

How much does it cost to set up a beginner grow?

Accepted Answer

A functional beginner setup typically runs $300–$600 for a 2×4 tent with a mid-range LED, basic ventilation, and starter nutrients. You can spend less with budget gear, but quality lighting and a reliable pH meter are worth the investment. Skimping on lights is the most common beginner mistake — it limits your yield ceiling no matter how well you do everything else.

Question 3

Should I start with seeds or clones?

Accepted Answer

Seeds are more accessible and give you a clean, pest-free start. Feminized seeds are the easiest choice for beginners since you don't have to worry about identifying and removing males. Clones are faster to harvest but carry the risk of introducing pests or disease, and you need a reliable source. For your first grow, feminized seeds from a reputable breeder are the safest bet.

Question 4

How long does a full grow take from seed to harvest?

Accepted Answer

Most photoperiod strains take 4–5 months total: roughly 4–8 weeks of vegetative growth followed by 8–12 weeks of flowering. Autoflowering strains are faster — typically 70–90 days seed to harvest — making them popular with beginners who want quicker results. The exact timeline depends heavily on the strain and how long you let the plant veg.

Question 5

Do I need a tent, or can I grow in a closet or spare room?

Accepted Answer

You don't need a tent, but they make environmental control much easier. Tents are light-proof, reflective on the inside, and have built-in ports for ventilation — all things you'd have to engineer yourself in a closet or room. For a first grow, a tent is almost always the better choice. They're inexpensive and eliminate a lot of variables.

Question 6

What nutrients does cannabis need, and when?

Accepted Answer

Cannabis needs three primary macronutrients: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). During veg, plants want higher nitrogen for leafy growth. As flowering begins, you shift toward higher phosphorus and potassium to support bud development and reduce nitrogen. Most nutrient lines are designed around this shift — follow the manufacturer's schedule as a starting point, then adjust based on how your plants respond.

Question 7

How do I know if I'm overfeeding or underfeeding?

Accepted Answer

Overfeeding typically shows as nutrient burn — brown, crispy leaf tips that progress inward. Underfeeding shows as yellowing that starts on older lower leaves and works upward. The tricky part is that some deficiency symptoms look identical to lockout caused by pH problems, so always check your pH before adjusting your feed. When in doubt, less is more — it's easier to correct underfeeding than to flush out a salt buildup.

Question 8

What pH should my water and soil be?

Accepted Answer

For soil grows, target a watering pH of 6.0–7.0, with 6.2–6.8 being the sweet spot. For coco or hydro, you want a tighter range of 5.5–6.5. pH outside these ranges locks out specific nutrients even when they're present in the medium — this is one of the most common causes of deficiency symptoms in otherwise healthy grows. A reliable pH meter is non-negotiable.

Question 9

Do I need to flush before harvest?

Accepted Answer

Flushing — running plain pH'd water through your medium for the final 1–2 weeks — is a common practice aimed at clearing residual salts and improving the final smoke. The science is debated, but many experienced growers swear by it. If you've been feeding heavy, a flush is a good idea. If you've been feeding conservatively with organic nutrients, it matters less. When in doubt, a light flush won't hurt.

Question 10

My leaves are yellowing — what's wrong?

Accepted Answer

Yellowing is one of the most common symptoms and has many causes: nitrogen deficiency, pH lockout, overwatering, root problems, or natural senescence in late flower. Start by checking your pH — it's the culprit more often than people expect. Then look at the pattern: yellowing that starts on lower, older leaves and moves up is usually nitrogen; yellowing between the veins on newer growth points to a micronutrient issue. If you're in late flower (last 2 weeks), some yellowing is completely normal.

Question 11

How do I know if I'm overwatering?

Accepted Answer

Overwatering is the number one beginner mistake. Signs include drooping leaves that look heavy and waterlogged (as opposed to underwatering, where leaves droop and feel thin/papery), slow growth, and soil that stays wet for days. The fix is simple: let the medium dry out more between waterings. Lift the pot — when it feels light, it's time to water. Aim for wet/dry cycles rather than keeping the soil constantly moist.

Question 12

I see white powder on my leaves — is that mold?

Accepted Answer

White powder on leaves is almost certainly powdery mildew (PM), a fungal issue that thrives in high humidity with poor airflow. It's common and treatable if caught early. Remove heavily affected leaves, improve airflow, and lower humidity below 50% in flower. Treatments include diluted hydrogen peroxide spray, potassium bicarbonate, or commercial PM products. In late flower, be careful — aggressive spraying can affect bud quality. Prevention through humidity control is far better than treatment.

Question 13

My plant stopped growing — what's happening?

Accepted Answer

Stunted or stalled growth usually comes down to a few culprits: root-bound containers (time to transplant), pH problems locking out nutrients, overwatering suffocating roots, light that's too close or too far, or temperature stress. Check the basics first — pH, watering frequency, and light distance. If the plant looks healthy but just isn't growing, it may be in a natural transition phase between veg and flower, which can cause a brief pause.

Question 14

I found bugs on my plants. What do I do?

Accepted Answer

Identify the pest first — spider mites leave tiny dots and fine webbing; fungus gnats fly around the soil; aphids cluster on new growth; thrips leave silvery streaks. Most pests are manageable if caught early. Neem oil, insecticidal soap, and diatomaceous earth are effective organic options for most common pests. In flower, avoid spraying buds — use yellow sticky traps and beneficial insects instead. Quarantine any new clones before introducing them to your grow space.

Question 15

What's the best type of grow light for beginners?

Accepted Answer

Modern quantum board LEDs are the best all-around choice for most home growers — they're energy-efficient, run cool, produce excellent yields, and have come down dramatically in price. HPS (high-pressure sodium) lights are still used by experienced growers and produce great results but generate more heat and use more electricity. CMH/LEC lights are a solid middle ground. Avoid cheap blurple LEDs — they're inefficient and the watt claims are misleading.

Question 16

How much light does cannabis need?

Accepted Answer

For photoperiod strains, cannabis needs 18 hours of light per day during veg and exactly 12 hours to trigger and maintain flowering. Autoflowers can be grown on 18–20 hours of light their entire life. In terms of intensity, aim for 400–600 µmol/m²/s (PPFD) during veg and 600–900 µmol/m²/s during flower. Most quality LED manufacturers provide a recommended hanging height and coverage area — start there and adjust based on plant response.

Question 17

How far should my light be from my plants?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the light and its intensity. Most quantum board LEDs perform well at 18–24 inches during veg and can be moved to 12–18 inches in flower. Too close causes light stress (bleaching, tacoing leaves); too far causes stretchy, airy growth. Watch your plants — if new growth is reaching upward and stretching between nodes, move the light closer. If leaf tips are bleaching or curling up, raise it. Your light's manual should have a starting recommendation.

Question 18

Do I need different lights for veg and flower?

Accepted Answer

No — a quality full-spectrum LED handles both stages well. Some growers use separate veg and flower rooms with different lights optimized for each stage, but for a home grow this is unnecessary. Full-spectrum quantum boards cover the entire light spectrum plants need from seedling to harvest. If your light has a veg/bloom switch or dimmer, use it — run lower intensity during seedling/early veg and ramp up as plants mature.
